How to Self Care When You Can’t Travel?
As an avid traveler, I enjoy the thrill of heading to the departure gate, stepping into the unknown, and exploring new cities. Traveling is my form of therapy and self-care. It has always been very therapeutic and healing. When life gets hectic as it always will and I am overwhelmed with personal and work-life challenges, I book a flight and hit reset.
However, the looming uncertainty of these COVID-19 times, inability to travel or resume life back to normalcy has been difficult on so many of us.
Although it is highly advised not to travel at this moment, there are still ways to do self-care at home. If you are still unsure of how to cope with not traveling amid the COVID-19 crisis, here are 6 ways on how to self-care when you can’t travel:
The best feeling in the world is curling up with a good book and forgetting the craziness going on in the world. Many of us are on lockdown and quarantined indoors with ample time on our hands. Now is the perfect time to pick up that book you have been neglecting or wanting to read. Listen to a podcast
When everything appears to be going the wrong way and the weight of the world is on your shoulders tune into a podcast for a quick woosah and mental health relief for the day. Podcasts are a great way to dive into discussions regarding topics such as love, career, life, finances, and sex. Some great podcasts to check out are xoNecole Happy Hour, Jesus & Jollof, Rants & Randomness, Black Girl Podcast, Yes Girl, Myleik Teele’s Podcast, Woman Evolve with Sarah Jake Roberts, Therapy for Black Girls, and Dead Ass with K&D.
Binge Watch a Show
Don’t be fooled, binge-watching is certainly a form of self-care. You can pass the time at home by binge-watching a new series on Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video. This may not take the annoyances of being stuck at home away but it will help you get through this quarantine.
If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed or under pressure due to the uncertainty and constant COVID-19 updates by the media, it’s ok to take a step back from everything. Take this time to be kinder to yourself. Starting your day off with affirmations or reading them throughout the day will help to control how your day goes. It will also give you the much-needed confidence to complete daily tasks and increase productivity.
Journal your thoughts
Getting your thoughts down on paper is a great self-soothing way to cope with these difficult times. Journaling can help to clear your mind and release things you may be too ashamed to share with others. Whenever this shall and when it’s finally all over, you can go back to this period in time and read your thoughts to see how much you’ve grown throughout this experience.
Do nothing and rest
Give yourself permission to rest! Don’t feel pressured to write that book or start that business right now. We’ve become so accustomed to always being on the go and rushing to reach that next big goal that we don’t how to appreciate the downtime. It’s ok to pause and enjoy the season of stillness that we’re currently in.
How have you been self-caring since we can’t travel?
